Analysis of Feasibility and Reliability of the Circulation Screen Test Method for Evaluation of Recyclability of Paper Packaging Materials

Abstract

Recently, interest in recycling waste and resources has rapidly increased owing to its economic benefits. Therefore, efforts in recycling cellulose fibers from cellulose fiber-based packaging waste have increased. Currently, no local standard test methods for recycling paper-packaging waste are available. Thus, we rely on the UL2485 test method from the US. Therefore, we propose a novel local standard test method for the cyclic-screening process to accurately evaluate the recycling efficiency of the local paper industry. This proposed novel domestic standard test and the UL 2485 methods are compared by recycling three types of paper-packaging materials. In addition, the reliability of both methods is determined by investigating their repeatability and reproducibility based on the ISO 5725-2 test method.

Both test methods have shown similar results. However, the proposed local standard test method is deemed superior because it does not exhibit any outliers that require exclusion. We conclude that the newly proposed domestic standard test method can be applied to evaluate the paper-based packaging material’s recycling efficiency.
