Abstract

In this study, two types of PVA(OH) with different molecular weights and VAE emulsion binder were used to investigate the effect of the difference in the formulation composition on the properties of the coating colors and the coated papers. The viscosity of the coating colors were decreased as the mixing ratio of the VAE emulsion binder increased rather than the amount of water-soluble polymer (PVA(OH)). The air permeability and contact angle of the coated papers were also improved as the blending ratio of the VAE emulsion binder increased. It was believed that printability (ink density) of coated papers were decreased as the amount of the VAE increased because the absorption characteristics of the VAE film for hydrophilic liquid were lower than that of PVA(OH). Meanwhile, the use of low molecular weight PVA(OH) seemed to be advantageous in terms of improving air permeability, contact angle, and printability of coated papers.
