Fuel Characteristics of Wood Pellets Fabricated with Tropical Acacia Wood

Abstract

The potential of wood pellets from Acacia mangium, a typical tropical afforestation species, and the fuel characteristics of wood pellets manufactured from them were investigated. Acacia pellets were manufactured using the flat-die pelletizer. To investigate the quality characteristics of pellets, physical and chemical properties, heating value, mechanical durability, etc. were measured. Judging from the appearance and quality characteristics of pellets, acacia wood was highly densified to pellets. In addition, the quality characteristics of acacia pellets are excellent enough to satisfy the quality standards of Korea’s 1st-grade and ISO I1-grade. From the above results, Acacia mangium is considered to be a very promising species as a raw material for wood pellets.
