Abstract

In this study, the application of fallen leaves as alternative materials for artificial soil, especially for the seeding pad components, was evaluated. The morphological properties of fallen leaves were modified using cutter mill. Crushed fallen leaves were fractionated between 30 and 200 mesh and used for seedling pad preparation. Seedling pads were prepared using a wet pulp mold simulator. The effect of fallen leaves and cocopeat on seedling pad properties were tested. The plate-shaped fallen leave powder reduced the seedling pad durability decrease. On the contrary, the addition of cocopeat greatly decreased the seedling pad durability, which could be due to the cocopeat’s particle shape. The capillary water content of the seedling pad, made with fallen leave powder, was higher compared to those made with cocopeat.
