Abstract

This study was carried out in order to evaluate the application possibility of VAE emulsion binder instead of SB latex. VAE emulsion binder was blended with SB latex binder at five different ratios. The characteristics of coating color and coated paper were investigated with increasing the blending ratio of VAE emulsion binder. As the blending ratio of VAE emulsion binder increased, the low shear viscosity of the coating color was lowered while the water retention was increased. Roughness of the coated papers prepared by blending VAE emulsion binder were somewhat higher than that of coated paper using only SB latex. It was found that, when addition amount of VAE emulsion binder was increased, dry- and wet-pick strength of the coated papers were decreased. Therefore, further researches are needed to improve wet-pick strength using VAE emulsion for paper coating.
