Abstract

Wood flour is expected to provide high bulk and high stiffness but low brightness, low tensile strength, and low smoothness when used in printing paper. We applied hydrogen peroxide bleaching and in-situ calcium carbonate coating to improve the brightness and used extensive grinding to improve the smoothness. Both hydrogen peroxide bleaching and in-situ calcium carbonate coating were effective in increasing the brightness. In-situ calcium carbonate coating after bleaching increased the paper brightness further. Wood flour that passed a 400 mesh screen increased smoothness effectively and produced higher smoothness than paper containing chemical pulp. In-situ calcium carbonate coating not only improved brightness but also greatly improved both tensile strength and smoothness. To utilize wood flour in printing paper, in-situ calcium carbonate coating therefore seems to be indispensable.
