Abstract

In this study, the characteristics of ink for the woodblock printing of Samguk Yusa, provided by the Korean Studies Institute, were analyzed. Owing to the influence of the glue that was added to manufacture the ink, its contact angle was maintained for a longer period than that of distilled water even after it was dropped on Hanji, a Korean traditional paper. Regarding the roundness of the ink, it exhibited a smaller diameter spread than that of distilled water after the same amounts of both substances were dropped on Hanji for 1 min; this result was also attributed to the effect of the glue. Based on the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) measurement and particle-size analysis of carbon black in the ink, its average diameter was 59 nm; its particle size was lower than that of general pine soot ink. Therefore, if a higher concentration of ink than those of the presently available ones is used, such an ink can be used for the woodblock printing of Samguk Yusa.
